Profile

Dr. R. Shashi Kumar is a Professor in the Department of Economics, and Director of UGC-Centre for the Study of Social Exclusion and Inclusive Policy, Bangalore University, Bangalore, India.  His main research interests are in international trade and agricultural economics.  He teaches in the areas of economic development, international economics, agri-business, research methodology and economic integration.  To address these issues, he employs a mix of theoretical and empirical methods.

He also contributed several research papers in academic journals, conferences, workshops and seminars.    He is the author of nearly 100 articles in economics and the author and editor of eight books.  He has written on growth, trade, development, institutions, energy, the World Trade Organization, and intellectual property.   He has published widely in academic and other journals, including the Journal of Agricultural Economics, UK, Review of Social Economy, Rutledge, Taylor & Francis Group, UK, in Women’s UN Report Network—WUNRN, International Journal of Multidisciplinary Research, Journal of Development and Social Change, Indian Commerce Bulletin, Business Window, Southern Economist, Review Projector, ISTR Asia and Pacific Regional Conference Souvenir.

He served in different positions in Bangalore University.  Member of the Task Force and Faculty of Arts, Peer Committee of NAAC, Chairman of the Board of Examiners, member of Governing Council etc., are few to mention. Presently he is the Chief Custodian of P.G. Examinations of Bangalore University.

Besides being working in Bangalore University, he also served as one of the expert members of the Karnataka Public Service Commission, Bangalore.  He also associated with the Reserve Bank of India, Mumbai, the University Grants Commission and the Indian Council for Social Science Research, New Delhi, and many other academic organizations.  He is also Governing Council member of the Centre for Economic Change, New Delhi, and an expert, Climate Board, United Nations Foundation, Washington D.C., USA.

He also served as an adviser in different projects.  To mention some of them: (1) Rice Crop in the South Asia Rice-Wheat Farming System, Mexico, (2) Power to Change: A Business Contribution to a Low-carbon Electivity Future, for The World Business Council for Sustainable Development, Geneva, Switzerland (3) Macroeconomics in Context: A text book created under the Group of the Advancement of Doctoral Education in Social Work, Global Development and Environment Institute, Tufts University, Medford, USA, (4) Climate Change Consequences, Bulgaria. (5) The Bretton Woods Project: Critical Voices on the World Bank and IMF, C/o Action Aid, Hamlym House, Macdonald Road, London, United Kingdom, (6)             Humanitarian Charter and Minimum Standards in Disaster Response, Switzerland.

To highlight his works,  he served as consultant to the World Bank, International Monetary Fund, Global Development and Environmental Institute, Centre for Global Development, USA, The Global Forum on Agricultural Research, Rome, WTO Public Forum, Switzerland etc.,   He is also an active participant in the LA VIA COMPESINA, an International Peasant Movement, Indonesia, Institute of Development Studies, University of Sussex, United Kingdom and the Declaration of Fundamental Social Rights, European Economic and Social Committee, Brussels.

He has made contributions to international monetary economics and agricultural economics by planning, design and development on the national and international levels. He also contributed several research papers in academic journals, conferences, workshops and seminars. Besides being member of Board of Studies, Board of Examiners and Ph.D., committees for many universities in India, he served as consultant to the World Bank in finalizing World Development Report 2008 and 2010, for IMF in evaluation of its works, and task force member of FAO in its attempt of reorienting agricultural research to meet the Millennium Development Goals.

He has also presented research papers and presided over the national and international conferences and seminars, numbering more than 100.   His paper on ‘Retail Industry in India: Moving towards the Destination,’ presented in Bangkok, Thailand, has received a wider appreciation.  He has been serving as member of Editorial Boards and referee for many national and international professional journals.  He has chosen for the special 25th Silver Anniversary Edition of MARQUIS Who’sWho in the World, USA, ‘Outstanding Intellectual of the 21st Century’ and  ‘IBC Foremost Educator of World 2008,’ both are awarded by the International Biographical Centre, England, ‘Leading Educator of the World – 2008’ awarded by International Biographical Centre, Great Britain.

At present he has two major research projects sponsored by the UGC and the ICSSR, New Delhi, related to (1) India’s Trade and Investment Relations with the European Union (UGC), and (2) Inclusive Growth and the Karnataka State:  Challenges and Opportunities (ICSSR).

The Yale School of Forestry and Environmental Studies, USA, has recognized him as the ‘Green Economist’, and The Global Executive Forum, UK, and the Berkeley Electronic Press USA, have recognized him as an ‘Economist’.  He is having academic acquaintances with universities and research institutes around the world.  His variety of academic ventures includes giving presidential address to the national seminars, conferences and participation in interactive sessions with renowned personalities in workshops, symposiums and special events.  At present, he is engaged in research on economic integration, dynamic open-economy models with nominal rigidities, exchange rates and international financial crises, monetary policy in open economies, fragility, civil society.

Brian Ekdale is an Associate Professor and the Director of Graduate Studies in the School of Journalism & Mass Communication at the University of Iowa. His research focuses on media work, digital/social media, and scholarly knowledge production. He approaches this research through the lens of global digital cultures. He is currently the Principal Investigator on an interdisciplinary, multi-university, grant-funded research project that examines the relationship between algorithmic personalization and online radicalization.

Caleb M. ADELOWO is, at present, a Postdoctoral Research Fellow at the Faculty of Economic and Management Sciences, North-West University, Potchefstroom, South Africa and an Assistant Director of Research and immediate past head of Science Policy Research and Innovation Studies Department of the National Centre for Technology Management, Obafemi Awolowo University, a ‘think tank’ Agency of government. He holds M.Sc. and PhD in Technology Management from the African Institute for Science Policy and Innovation Obafemi Awolowo University. He bagged a master degree in intellectual property from the Africa University, Zimbabwe through a World Intellectual Property Organisation scholarship in 2010. He was an Africalics PhD Scholar at Aalborg University, Denmark in 2016. He is a member of the GLOBELICS Scientific Board (GSB).
