To implement this paper, the author has conducted a study on the reading ability results of first-year pupils in Distric 5, Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam, using a variety of research methods. Specifically, the author has used survey research to collect data from the participants, statistical analysis to analyze the data, and classification techniques to organize the data into categories or groups. Therefrom, the author would like to provide practical suggestions for improving their reading skills. These suggestions likely focus on teaching and learning methods that are suitable for the pupils’ current level of reading ability. The paper is not only meaningful in terms of academic, theoretical and practical aspects of teaching and learning activities to develop Vietnamese reading skills for first year pupils in Vietnam but also can be applied to teach reading skills in other languages of the world.
TTK Tuyen Copyright (c) 2024 TTK Tuyen http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0 2024-01-23 2024-01-23 10 1 1 19 10.17501/23572744.2023.10101 eTu{d,b}e: DEVELOPING AND PERFORMING SPATIALIZATION MODELS FOR IMPROVISING MUSICAL AGENTS https://tiikmpublishing.com/proceedings/index.php/icoah/article/view/1308
The eTube is a simple acoustic instrument outfitted with a microphone and a two-button controller which we program to facilitate interaction between an improviser and improvising musical agents. Through an iterative research-creation process, we develop and perform various etudes with the eTube and musical agents, generating new knowledge through musical creation. Through this process, we have developed two interactive spatialization systems for the eTube.

We begin by describing the eTu{d,b}e framework which refers to the eTube instrument and a series of improvised etudes based on human-computer musical interactions. An overview of the instrument is presented, as well as the existing systems as they were when Pocius began the spatialization portion of this project. Secondly, we outline two interactive spatialization systems designed for improvised performance with the eTube and musical agents. An overview of the updates made to the eTu{d,b}e framework is presented, followed by a description of the two spatialization systems. Finally, six different performances are presented as case studies to emphasize the advancements and challenges of the project as new approaches are developed.
Kasey Pocius Tommy Davis Vincent Cusson Copyright (c) 2024 Kasey Pocius, Tommy Davis, Vincent Cusson http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0 2024-01-23 2024-01-23 10 1 20 37 10.17501/23572744.2023.10102 THE TRADITIONAL WEDDING ATTIRE OF VIETNAMESE PEOPLE IN HO CHI MINH CITY NOWADAYS https://tiikmpublishing.com/proceedings/index.php/icoah/article/view/1331
In today’s era, science and technology are crucial keys to innovation and creativity, connecting all fields such as technology, engineering, commerce, and art, as well as connecting artists, researchers, educators, and technologists to create a development era with many changes, new forms, and more choices. In Vietnam in general and Ho Chi Minh City in particular, innovation and technological development have drastically changed almost every aspect, especially the fashion industry, in which the most prominent influences and changes have been in traditional wedding attire. Science and technology have brought many conveniences and innovations to traditional wedding attire, such as accelerating the production process, mass production, and precision cutting and sewing equipment; Vietnamese wedding attire undergoes changes in diverse styles, colors, and artistic decorations in line with global fashion trends or changes in accompanying accessories, meeting all consumer needs. However, alongside these advantages, many elements could affect artistic and humanitarian values, ethics towards society and individuals, and even cultural identity in traditional wedding attire. This trend is particularly evident in the current aesthetic preferences for wedding attire, such as scanty, overly thin, or see-through styles. Traditional attire is an invaluable asset, the core of national identity, and the foundation for creating new values and cultural exchanges. Therefore, research through data collection, information synthesis, and analysis is necessary to highlight the key issues that have shaped the mainstream of traditional wedding fashion in Vietnam, specifically in Ho Chi Minh City, under the influence of science and technology. This research gives comments and determines aesthetic directions to build, develop, and still preserve the cultural identities of traditional wedding attire in Ho Chi Minh City and the country as a whole.
Thi Huynh Nguyen Nguyen NTH Le Copyright (c) 2024 Thi Huynh Nguyen Nguyen, NTH Le http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0 2024-01-23 2024-01-23 10 1 38 65 10.17501/23572744.2023.10103 EXPLORING ADVANTAGES OF IN-CLASS FLIPPED LEARNING TO ENHANCE CULTURAL COMPETENCE https://tiikmpublishing.com/proceedings/index.php/icoah/article/view/1314
This research study is a form of qualitative action research that aims to explore the benefits of in-class flipped learning as a means to enhance student cultural competence in an American Culture course. It was conducted at a university in Vietnam, where the recent COVID-19 pandemic introduced unprecedented online courses for education. However, blending online and offline instructional methods in the classroom was relatively easy for students, contrary to the initial concerns of the stakeholders and society. The instructor implemented in-class flipped instruction to improve the cultural competence of undergraduate business majors in an American Culture course. The focus was on enhancing students' knowledge and perspectives on cultures and learner autonomy through technology. The study was conducted for a semester, and each lesson plan was designed to achieve these objectives. The students had access to a textbook as a reference to explore further. The course created an insightful and collaborative learning environment based on qualitative analysis of the interviews, class observations, and students' work, including weekly assignments and end-of-semester group projects. The study found that college students can quickly improve their mindset with proper guidance and resources. This can be achieved by increasing interactions between students and instructors and transforming learners' mindsets on their responsibility for learning. Overall, this research study shows that in-class flipped learning can effectively enhance cultural competence among students, particularly in courses related to cultural studies and business. It also highlights the importance of creating an interactive and collaborative learning environment to facilitate student learning and development.
Migyu Kang Copyright (c) 2024 Migyu Kang http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0 2024-01-23 2024-01-23 10 1 66 76 10.17501/23572744.2023.10104 DISASTER MANAGEMENT STRATEGIES: A MODERATING ROLE OF TRANSFORMATIONAL LEADERSHIP AMID COVID-19 FOR SURVIVAL OF ORGANIZATION THROUGH DISASTER MANAGEMENT https://tiikmpublishing.com/proceedings/index.php/icoah/article/view/1334
Studies all over the globe are used to indicate crisis management strategies for the tourism and hospitality industries. Although the rear of these studies are pointed towards crises that are due to natural disasters or pandemics etc. Therefore, there is a need for specific studies that are directed towards the disaster management strategies by hotels in order to provide a detailed perspective for work and policy making. Hence this study is one of the premier studies in the field that used a complex research model based on serial mediation in order to provide a thorough understanding of disaster management strategies used by well-known hotels. Analysis has been made by using SMART-PLS software from the data collected from top-ranked individuals from well-known hotels in Pakistan. Analysis of data reflected that there is a substantial impact of crisis management strategies on the performance of well-known hotels.
Muhammad Faisal Sultan BN Nehal RA Khan Copyright (c) 2024 Muhammad Faisal Sultan, BN Nehal , RA Khan http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0 2024-01-23 2024-01-23 10 1 77 94 10.17501/23572744.2023.10105 THE bei CONSTRUCTIONS IN CANTONESE: A CORPUS-DRIVEN STUDY https://tiikmpublishing.com/proceedings/index.php/icoah/article/view/1332
This paper aims to analyze the Cantonese bei constructions with a ‘corpus-driven’ approach. Bei is a polysemous word with the following meanings: (a) Bei means ‘give’, which can take two nominal objects. (b) Bei is an indirect object marker. (c) Bei is a beneficiary marker. (d) Bei is a causative verb that means ‘allow’, forming a serial verb construction with another verb. (e) Bei is a passive marker in a passive construction. In this paper, around 800 examples of Cantonese bei constructions have been extracted from two corpora: Hong Kong Cantonese Corpus and Hong Kong Cantonese Adult Language Corpus. They are the Cantonese corpora freely available on the internet and reflect the usage of Hong Kong Cantonese in the 1990s. It is found that bei is always followed by one noun phrase, sometimes by two noun phrases, but there are a few patterns involving an ellipsis of the direct object or/and the indirect object, which were seldom addressed in previous studies of double object constructions involving bei. Cantonese bei constructions may result in an ambiguity of causative and passive constructions, of which the syntactic subject can be interpreted as semantic roles as “causer” or “affectee”. The interpretation often depends on pragmatic and contextual factors, which can be examined by the attested language data of the corpora.
Ping Wai WONG Copyright (c) 2024 Ping Wai WONG http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0 2024-01-23 2024-01-23 10 1 95 105 10.17501/23572744.2023.10106 THE DAXIANGGUO TEMPLE BUDDHIST ORCHESTRA OF CHINA: CONTEMPORARY ROLE AND FUNCTIONS https://tiikmpublishing.com/proceedings/index.php/icoah/article/view/1328
The Daxiangguo Temple is located in Kaifeng City, Henan Province, China, and the center of the ancient capital of the Seven Dynasties. Because of its status as a royal temple, the Buddhist orchestra was involved in several imperial events with a long history and profound cultural heritage. Since July 2002, the Daxiangguo Temple Buddhist Orchestra (DTBO) has been rebuilt. 2007, the DTBO acquired the second national intangible cultural heritage project batch. The author investigates the DTBO in recent years, through ethnographic writing, about the operation of the orchestra in the last 20 years, the content of its performances, and investigates its current situation in terms of cultural inheritance and seeking development after its successful declaration as a national intangible cultural heritage project. Research shows that the DTBO plays an essential role in preserving traditional Chinese music culture and propagating religious beliefs and ethical ideas in modern society. The local government displayed it as a cultural symbol of the Central Plains. The preservation and continuation of cultural genes strengthen the religious consciousness of believers and the sense of belonging and cultural identity of the Central Plains people.
mengna yang NW Madzhi Copyright (c) 2024 mengna yang, NW Madzhi http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0 2024-01-23 2024-01-23 10 1 106 119 10.17501/23572744.2023.10107 COVID-19 PANDEMIC AND CHILD-PARENT RELATIONSHIP: A SERIAL MEDIATION MODEL BASED ON PARENTAL STRESS AND HARSH PARENTING https://tiikmpublishing.com/proceedings/index.php/icoah/article/view/1335
The purpose of this study is to relate the outbreak of COVID-19 to the child-parent relationship. Although the study uses a serial mediation model of parental stress and harsh parenting that makes this study innovative as compared to the other studies conducted in this area. Moreover, this study is also supplemented with the moderating role of the joint family system which is another unique element in the study. Hence the significance of this study has many folds as this study is not only for the increase of more research work on this burning issue but also aids in policy making avoid any further harm. In line with gaps highlighted by prior studies, this study collects data from parents from Pakistan in order to assess the impact of COVID-19 on child-parent relationships. Analysis has been made by applying SME through SMART-PLS which is effective to increase rigor and testability of the research. Findings indicated that COVID-19 resulted in a significant increase in parental stress that may also harm the child-parent relationship.
Muhammad Faisal Sultan Abdul Kabeer Kazi Nazia Abdul Rehman Copyright (c) 2024 Muhammad Faisal Sultan, Abdul Kabeer Kazi, Nazia Abdul Rehman http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0 2024-01-23 2024-01-23 10 1 120 132 10.17501/23572744.2023.10108
